Where in world was that photo taken?
How do you find these great locations?
What are your favorite locations for photos?
These are questions I hear so much from my social media fans, photography clients and friends. The truth is, I think you’d be pretty surprised to see that many of my images (especially my personal images) are not taken in parks or perfectly landscaped areas that most people would expect. In fact, the photo locations I choose often have less to do with an abundance of beautiful flowers and green grass and more to do with a pocket of good light or an interesting feature such as a cool tree or natural textures. I especially love overgrown fields and dried up prairie areas where there is tons of texture
and uneven landscapes that make photos more interesting.
I am going to show you a great example of a fun spot I found over spring break with my children. We took an afternoon with Grandma to see Beauty and the Beast at a theater near her home in Ohio. It was a heavily overcast, drab and drizzly kind of afternoon so light wasn’t ideal, actually it was awful. However, as we walked out of the movie theater and made our way through the parking lot, I noticed a cute little pair of trees and a rustic wooden fence along side the parking lot that caught my eye.
I didn’t have my camera with me, so we came back a little later to check it out.
As I said, the light was incredibly bad, but I knew I could work with that in my photo software post capture since I kind of love moody images anyways. I thought the pair of trees were adorable and my kids were happy to go check them out since they love to climb trees together. Not sure what prompted the sweet little hug, but my mama heart was
happy to see it happen and made sure to capture it all while I could.
Here are some of my final images at this location.
Cute right?
Here is a snapshot of a moment earlier from a different angle, and you can see that pretty photos can be taken
along side everyday, seemingly boring locations near grocery stores, movie theaters or roadside if you truly stop to look.
I would have loved it if we had prettier clothing on,
but that always comes second to documenting my family honestly and with love
